Have you ever bought something based on a commercial? You were the product of an excellent marketing campaign. These are coordinated by marketing teams who work for a variety of organisations. We caught up with a marketing executive to find out more about their role and how they perform their day to day duties.  By definition, a marketing executive is responsible for promoting a product or service while maintaining the image of a company. Sending out a positive message to the consumer is vital and key in keeping a company profitable.

Can you sum up your main responsibilities?

My main responsibilities include planning and running advertising campaigns, public relations, organising events, sponsorship and research for a retail company. My focus is on promoting new products for large fashion designers. My other responsibilities include organising photo shoots, managing the production of marketing material, communicating with target audiences and maintaining consumer relationships.

Did you require further education to get to your current position?

I started as a marketing apprentice at the age of 17 and have worked my way up from there.

What are the working hours like?

My working hours can vary. I sometimes have to work very long hours. If we have an event or a deadline fast approaching, my hours can go up drastically.

What are the pluses and minuses of working as a Marketing Executive?

I sometimes get to work abroad which means I am able to explore different cultures and how business environments differ from country to country. The job is quite high pressured and can sometimes seem like everything has landed on you at once. This can be stressful at times.

What has been your greatest achievement of your career?

My greatest achievement is working my way up from the bottom. I get a sense of achievement every time I meet the goals set at the beginning of a campaign or project.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

In 5 years’ time I see myself working as a marketing manager or having my own public relations company. I hope to move into the entertainment industry.

Do you think the benefits and rewards match up to your expectations?

The benefits are good. I do believe that in order to increase the benefits that you receive you have to prove yourself and put in that extra effort. In order to be successful, I have had to be very self-motivated.

How are the social aspects at your workplace?

The social aspects vary dependant on what you are working on and how much time you have. In my spare time, I prefer to relax.
